Chicago, Ill. (Aug. 28, 2017) — Chicago Hearing Society will host its annual benefit, “Raise Your Paddle for CHS!,” on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017. The benefit will be held at SPiN Chicago, 344 N. State St., one of the city’s newest go-to spots.

Early bird tickets are available now for $75 each through Sept. 28; prices increase to $80 as of Sept. 29. Sponsorship opportunities range from $1,000 to $10,000. The evening includes dinner, ping-pong, auction, games and more. Proceeds from the event will support the nonprofit’s services and programs.

For more than 100 years, Chicago Hearing Society (CHS) has been serving the needs—and empowering the lives—of those who are Deaf, DeafBlind or Hard of Hearing with a variety of services, ranging from an Audiology Clinic and Hearing Aid Bank to Interpreter Services. CHS also offers a variety of social services, including a unique youth mentoring program that connects deaf adults with deaf and hard-of-hearing students and a program that helps survivors of domestic violence and their families.

Through the decades, CHS has supported people of all ages, from newborns through seniors. Patients come from all walks of life, but the majority of those served have limited financial resources. For more than a century, CHS’s doors have been open to all.

Margaret definitely knows what she wants—a job. And she also knows what it will take to get one—better job skills and her GED. Anixter Center is supporting her all the way.

It is with great sadness that I announce the closing of our New Focus program effective June 16, 2017. New Focus cares for individuals who have suffered a traumatic brain injury. The main funding source for New Focus, a major grant from the Employment Division of DHS, will be terminated on June 30, 2017.

The decision to close New Focus, like closing any of our programs, is difficult. However, without sufficient funding, I believe that the 18 – 20 clients served daily can receive the best possible care from other providers. We are working to provide uninterrupted programming for our clients and our existing clients are being referred to other service providers. Anixter Center staff will have the opportunity to apply for open Anixter Center positions.

I would like to thank the New Focus staff for their dedicated efforts on behalf of our clients and I wish them best of luck in their future endeavors.

Sincerely,
Dr. Teresa Garate
President and CEO

Anixter Center Announces Its CALOR Division
to Join AIDS Healthcare Foundation

Transition to Take Place Feb. 1, 2017

Chicago, Ill. (Jan. 30, 2017) — Effective February 1, Anixter Center’s CALOR Division will become part of AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF).

CALOR (Comprensión y Apoyo a Latinos en Oposición al Retrovirus) was founded in 1990 as a grassroots organization in Chicago to support Latinos living with or affected by AIDS, a much underserved community at that time. In 1993, CALOR joined Anixter Center so that it could expand the population it served and the services provided. Today, CALOR is a recognized leader in HIV/AIDS support services in the city.

“By joining AIDS Healthcare Foundation, CALOR will now be able to serve even more people, far beyond the Chicago area. It is the perfect next step for CALOR as it continues to evolve and respond to new challenges in this field. And, more important, it is a wonderful transition for CALOR clients who will now have access to nationwide and global resources,” said Dr. Teresa Garate, President & CEO of Anixter Center.

Based in Los Angeles, AHF is a global nonprofit organization providing cutting-edge medicine and advocacy to more than 659,000 people in 36 countries. It is currently the largest provider of HIV/AIDS medical care in the United States.

“CALOR has been fortunate to be part of the Anixter Center family for many years,” said Omar Lopez, Director of CALOR. “We have grown and benefitted so much from the relationship and are now perfectly positioned to join AHF and take on a new leadership role in the area of HIV/AIDS prevention services. This is an exciting opportunity for our staff and our clients.”
